The cost of prescription drugs is a big business for the New Zealand government and the Department of Health. A year ago, health officials spent $1.2 billion on a new drug called Tadalafil, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.
“There is an increased cost of health care and public services,” said Peter Balfour, a pharmacist and medical director at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
In 2012, the price of prescription medicines rose 12% to $12.50 per prescription. And, according to the government, the costs have gone up by $6.3 billion a year, a five-fold increase from 2006.
But the government says that is an unacceptably high cost, given the number of medicines available. The government has spent $3.2 billion to subsidize a new drug that has already gone on the market.
The government says it has a “large network of medical experts” with more than 2,500 prescribers in the New Zealand market, and it wants to spend more money to make up the cost of the medicine.
“The government will have to spend money on the medicines it is currently providing to the New Zealand population to see if it can provide a more cost-effective, more accessible and safe healthcare system,” said Dr Chris Smith, an associate professor of urology at the University of Auckland.

Tadalafil was developed as a treatment for erectile dysfunction by the British pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a treatment for ED in the United States, and other countries. In 2015, Pfizer received FDA approval for Tadalafil for sale in the United States, Europe, and Australia.
The first-generation drug, called Cialis, is the first treatment for erectile dysfunction and is sold in the United States. However, the FDA has not approved the drug for the treatment of ED in the United States. A second-generation version of Cialis was approved by the FDA for sale in the United States in 2015.
The New Zealand government also has asked the federal government to approve a new drug, the anti-hypertension drug lisinopril, to treat hypertension.
